The following is an excerpt from Boston University’s newsletter BU Today.
Boston University’s Yawkey Nonprofit Internship Program is a selective program designed for sophomores and juniors that provides funding to support participation in unpaid internships at nonprofit organizations. For Spring 2021, we have extended funding to remote internships as well.
In addition to providing living allowance stipends for unpaid nonprofit internships, the program provides an educational framework which strengthens the experience through a series of program components that help students to plan for, engage in, and reflect upon their internships.
Fall or spring semester internships must be located in the Boston area. Summer internships may be outside of the Boston area if the organization’s mission is aligned with one of 6 broad areas, the Yawkey Foundation’s Areas of Giving.

About the Yawkey Foundation
The Yawkey Foundation traces its origin back over eight decades to the philanthropic commitments of Tom and Jean Yawkey. With great concern for the forgotten and underserved, Tom and Jean Yawkey took careful steps to ensure that their legacy would live on through the work of the Yawkey Foundation. The Yawkeys were perhaps best known for their longtime ownership of the Boston Red Sox. More quietly, but with just as much passion and commitment, Tom and Jean Yawkey were also engaged in an unwavering dedication to those most in need.
The Yawkeys’ commitment to philanthropy extended to many organizations throughout New England and Georgetown County, South Carolina. They were particularly interested in supporting organizations that encouraged educational opportunities, improved health care, enhanced human service programs, provided youth and amateur athletic opportunities, celebrated arts and cultural endeavors, and valued conservation efforts. As a result of Tom and Jean Yawkey’s generosity, the Yawkey Foundation has awarded more than $500 million in grants to nonprofit organizations serving the people of New England and Georgetown, South Carolina since 1977. The Trustees continue to take great care in their grant making to preserve and perpetuate the original philanthropic vision and interests of the Yawkeys.
