In addition to these Program & Small Capital grants, earlier this year Yawkey Foundation participated in milestone events related to two health care Transformational Capital grants awarded in 2022:

  • Groundbreaking for The Dimock Center’s 39-bed post-detox clinical stabilization services unit for men and women in Roxbury, MA. The unit will provide support services for 1,000 individuals annually who have completed inpatient detox for substance use disorder and receive intensive clinical services, including mental health services, to help them stay in recovery and prevent them from cycling in and out of detox. There are currently no post-detox CSS beds for men within city limits.
  • Opening of Boston Medical Center’s new single-stop Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic to improve access to quality medical and behavioral pediatric care by creating a co-located facility with Pediatrics, General Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine departments, as well as coordinated care and navigation services, such as transportation, social worker, and interpreter support.

The Foundation’s legacy of supporting access to health care is anchored in the philanthropic commitments demonstrated by Jean and Tom Yawkey during their lifetimes. In 1945, the couple made a significant charitable gift to support the construction of Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, helping to bring a hospital to an underserved rural community in Georgetown, South Carolina.

Shortly thereafter, Tom began supporting the early research of Boston-based Dr. Sidney Farber and the Children’s Cancer Research Foundation, and in 1952, he designated the organization – now known as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s “Jimmy Fund” – as the official charity of the Boston Red Sox, which the Yawkey family owned between 1933-2002. Tom served as Trustee of Dana Farber Cancer Institute until his death in 1976, acting as President from 1960-1969 and Chairman of the Board from 1969-1976. Jean served as a Trustee from 1976 until her death in 1992, serving as Chair from 1976 to 1979.
